DIY Chalk Painted Console

Everyone loves a good DIY, right?  A few weeks ago, my sister and I decided that we were going to try chalk painting. We actually made some of our own and we bought some from a local store. My advice, just buy from a local retailer. Our homemade stuff worked, but we found it difficult to get the correct consistency. I’m sure if we practiced enough we could get it down, but the pre-mix cans are the perfect amount for most DIY projects and truth be told, we actually spent way more money making our own.

So DIY Saturday rolls around. I am scouting the house for pieces to paint, while my husband is trying to convince me not to paint. I am a compulsive re-arranger and I am constantly changing things up. It is just my nature, I thrive on change!! This slight addiction sometimes drives my husband nuts, but bless his heart, after almost 14 years of marriage he just rolls with it. He tried to stake his claim Captain Morgan style on this console, but you just can’t overrule a girl with a paint brush in hand.

Please do not judge… our garage is a mess(DIY project in progress, photography props, tools, and etc) it is the catch all for everything and I do not think we will ever be able to park cars in it again. So far we have not lost any of our children in there, nor has the HOA sent us a complaint letter, success in my book!!:)

Once our prep work was done, I got right down to business. I would recommend painting in a slightly enclosed area. The day we painted it was super windy, so we decided to work in the garage.

The paint went on nicely and it dried super fast. We did two coats of paint and once they had dried, I lightly sanded the edges by hand to give this piece a slightly distress look. The final step was to apply a wax to set and polish the piece. My favorite wax was one we got locally. It smelled of lavender instead of something toxic and yuckyJ

Our 1st chalk piece was done and by the time the day was done, we had chalk painted a rocking chair, a coffee table, and a nightstand. Four pieces in one day!!! In fear that every piece of furniture we owned would be painted, my husband hid my paint brushes. So, I defaulted to the roller and painted my kitchen gray this weekend.

Hope your 1st chalk painting experience is fun. If you do take on this DIY, be sure to share images with us on our Facebook page!!! We would love to see your work!!

If you are local, check out both

They sell chalk paint and they also offer chalk painting classes.
